Ivory Coast weather is classified as warm and humid, its patterns changing accordingly and varying greatly between equatorial in the southern coasts to tropical in the middle to semiarid in the far north. Another characteristic of weather in Ivory Coast is the fact that rather than temperature, it’s rainfall and wind direction that distinguish the four seasons.
The first half of the year is determined by warm maritime air masses thrusting northward across the Ivory Coast following the sun movements. The eastern part of the Ivory Coast is flat and very sandy. On the western part of its coast, it is extremely rocky and mountainous. Further away from the coast, there is a tropical forest that is 95 to 185 miles wide.
As mentioned earlier, Ivory Coast weather seasons are more clearly apparent by rainfall and wind direction than by temperature. Continental and maritime air masses, following the apparent movement of the sun from north to south, determine the cycle of the seasons that is associated with heat and cold farther from the equator.
Intertropical fronts transport warm air, precipitation, and customary winds from the southwest. By midyear the solar cycle reverses, pushing continental air masses to move southward over the nation and allowing the harmattan - a dry dusty wind that blows along the northwest coast of Africa- to dominate. These outside winds are moderate rarely exceeding 15 or 20km per hour.
Ivory Coast weather can easily being divided into three distinguished seasons: temperate and arid from November to March, hot and dry March to May, and hot with heavy rainfalls averaging 110cm annually during June to October. Average daily temperatures in the coastal regions are between 25 and 32 °C, these areas are usually dry for most of the year.
Temperatures also range anywhere from 10 to 40 °C. Temperatures exceeding 30° C are found in the south, and further north. Humidity levels in the south are 85%, and 71% in the north. Ivory Coast weather in the central forest district is continually wet and humid. The northern savannah is the hottest area of the country.
